 [TV리포트=남금주 기자] '국민 마라토너' 이봉주가 아내의 헌신으로 난치병을 극복했다고 밝혔다.
 23일 방송된 tvN '유 퀴즈 온 더 블럭'(이하 '유퀴즈')에서는 MC 유재석, 조세호가 출연했다.
 이날 무려 41번 마라톤을 완주한 '국민 마라토너' 이봉주가 등장했다. 결혼 24년 차인 이봉주는 아내 김미순을 처음 보고 반한 점에 대해 "저도 눈을 봤다. 제 눈이 워낙 작아서 되도록이면 2세를 위해서라도 눈이 큰 사람을 좋아했다"라며 "아들들 눈이 크다. 선택을 잘한 거죠"라고 전했다. 
 이봉주는 쌍꺼풀 수술을 했다고 고백하며 "90년대에 한 거다. 한때 말이 많았다"라며 "어릴 때부터 눈이 작은 게 콤플렉스였다. 고등학교 졸업하고 쌍꺼풀 수술을 했는데, 그날 비가 엄청 와서 선글라스 끼고 학교를 가니까 다 쳐다보더라. 한 번 더 해야 하는데"라고 솔직하게 말했다.

 8년 연애 끝에 2002년에 결혼한 이봉주의 결혼식장은 바로 잠실 주경기장. 유재석은 "국민 영웅이니까 잠실 주경기장에서 한 거다"라고 흥분하며 "드레스는 故 앙드레김, 사회는 임백천, 축가는 윤도현이었고, 마라톤 대회 우승자가 성화로 화촉 점화를 했다"라고 전하며 놀랐다. 
 그런가 하면 근육긴장 이상증으로 4년간 고생한 이봉주는 "모 방송을 촬영하다가 갑자기 배가 제 의지와 상관없이 막 뛰었다"라며 "허리는 계속 굽어지고 복부는 경련 수축이 반복됐다"라고 말문을 열었다. 아내는 "19개월간 여러 병원에 다녔는데, 상태가 더 나빠졌다"라며 원인을 찾지 못한 채 시간이 흘렀다고 밝혔다. 
 아내는 "나중엔 목이 조여서 음식 삼키는 것도 힘들어하고, 숨 쉬는 것도 힘들어했다. 24시간 잠을 못 잤다"라며 "신경 차단 수술도 하고, 보톡스도 맞아봤다. 병원에서도 치료법을 모른다"라며 힘들었던 당시를 떠올렸다.

 이봉주는 "원인을 찾을 수 없어서 더 답답했다"라며 해볼 수 있는 건 다 시도해 봤지만 소용없었다고 밝혔다. 이봉주는 "아내는 수술을 반대했는데, 병원에선 7~80% 좋아질 거라고 했다. 근데 수술 후 더 안 좋아졌다"라고 했다. 그때부턴 아내의 싸움이었다. 아내는 "제철 음식 위주로 식단을 짰다. 처음엔 못 먹어서 다 갈았다. 마사지도 많이 해줬다"라며 "잠을 자게 하려고 좋은 식재료를 많이 찾아봤다. 그리고 몸을 따뜻하게 유지했더니 잠을 자는 시간이 조금씩 늘더라"라고 밝혔다. 2년 반 동안 노력 끝에 복부 경련이 사라졌다고.
 이봉주는 "4년 동안 지옥에 갔다 온 것 같다"고 털어놓았다. 아내의 간호 덕에 조금씩 회복한 이봉주는 천천히 운동하기 시작했다고. 그렇게 이봉주는 2024년 4월 삼척 황영조 국제 마라톤에 출전했다. 뛴 거리는 100m 정도였지만, 가족의 간절함이 이뤄낸 기적이었다. 이봉주는 "30분이라도 내 몸으로 뛰어보는 게 소원이었다"라고 밝혔다. 6개월 뒤엔 3.6km를 뛰었다고. 아내는 "풀코스 우승했을 때보다 감동이었다"라며 감격의 순간을 전했다.
