 배우 선우용여가 미국에서 겪은 인종차별 일화를 공개했다. 지난 27일 유튜브 채널 ‘순풍 선우용여’에는 ‘미국에서 8년간 선우용여가 시달린 충격 인종차별 (한맺힌 LA)’라는 제목의 영상이 게재됐다. 이날 선우용여는 40년 전 미국 이민 당시 살았던 집과 운영했던 한식당을 찾아가며 과거를 회상했다. 그는 당시를 떠올리며 “엘리베이터를 탔더니 미국 여자가 나를 탁 보더니 ‘으으음!’ 이러더라. 그래서 ‘나를 보더니 왜 코를 막고 난리야’라고 생각했다. 근데 내려가더니 나보고 손가락 욕을 했다. 이게 제일 큰 욕이라고 하더라. 난 그때 그게 제일 큰 욕인지 몰랐다”고 말했다. 이어 “딸 연재가 학교를 갔다 와서 어떤 여자애가 ‘크으윽’ 이러더니 엄마한테 손가락 욕을 했다고 했다. 연재가 그게 굉장한 욕이라고 알려줬다. 그래서 ‘어머, 나쁜 X’라고 했다. 저녁에 애들 데려다주고 기다렸는데 그 여자가 오더라. 내가 ‘너 좀 와라’ 했더니 오면서 ‘갓 댐’이라고 했다. 치즈 냄새도 안 좋다고 하고, ‘스멜’이라며 흉을 봤다”고 덧붙였다.

 선우용여는 참다못해 직접 대응했다고도 털어놨다. 그는 “내가 더 이상 이런 거 하지 말라고 했다. 그랬더니 그다음에는 숨을 참더라. 그래서 그때 향수를 알았다. 내 식당 웨이트리스에게 ‘어떤 향수를 사야 하냐, 뿌려야 되는 거냐’고 물었다. 매너라고 하길래 로데오에 가서 향수를 샀다”고 전했다. 하지만 향수에 익숙지 않았던 그는 곧바로 웃지 못할 해프닝을 겪었다. 선우용여는 “나는 뭣도 모르고 들입다 발랐다. 우리 남편이 무슨 냄새냐고 난리가 났다. 향수를 그렇게 뿌리면 안 되는 거라고 하더라. 그래서 그때부터 내가 향수에 대해 알게 됐다”고 했다. 그는 “잘못된 일을 겪을 때가 나를 깨워주는 것 같다. 걔가 나한테 ‘스멜’이라고 했던 게 공부가 됐다”고 당시를 돌아봤다. 서형우 기자 wnstjr1402@kyunghyang.com
