 [스포츠서울 | 이승록 기자] 제로베이스원(ZEROBASEONE)이 돌아왔다. 활동 연장 가능성을 두고 여러 관측이 이어지는 가운데 “아이코닉한 존재가 되겠다”는 포부와 함께 컴백했다.

 제로베이스원(성한빈 김지웅 장하오 석매튜 김태래 리키 김규빈 박건욱 한유진)은 1일 첫 번째 정규 앨범 ‘네버 세이 네버(NEVER SAY NEVER)’를 발표했다. 미니 5집 ‘블루 파라다이스(BLUE PARADISE)’ 이후 약 6개월 만의 신보다.

 ‘네버 세이 네버’는 데뷔 후 처음 선보이는 정규 앨범이다. ‘청춘 3부작’과 ‘파라다이스 2부작’을 잇는 흐름으로, 지난 2년간의 여정을 응축했다. 멤버들은 미디어 쇼케이스에서 “2년간의 성장과 변화를 담아 애착이 크다”며 “‘보이즈플래닛’부터 저희를 응원해준 팬분들께 큰 선물이 되길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

 타이틀곡은 ‘아이코닉(ICONIK)’. 1970~80년대 유행한 누 디스코(Nu-Disco) 사운드를 현대적으로 해석한 팝 트랙이다. 제로베이스원은 그루브하면서도 세련된 퍼포먼스와 함께 “타인의 평가와 상관없이, 우린 스스로 아이코닉한 존재가 될 수 있다”는 메시지를 노래에 담았다. 장하오는 “‘아이코닉’을 처음 들었을 때 강렬한 에너지를 받았다”며 “우리만의 색깔을 보여줄 수 있겠다는 자신감을 느꼈다”고 말했다.

 제로베이스원은 엠넷 ‘보이즈 플래닛’을 통해 결성된 9인조 프로젝트 그룹으로 2023년 7월 정식 데뷔했다. 2년 만에 K팝을 대표하는 글로벌 팀으로 급부상했다. 이번 신보도 발매 당일에만 110만 장 이상 팔리며, 데뷔 앨범부터 6개 앨범 연속 ‘밀리언셀러’ 반열에 오른 K팝 최초의 그룹이 됐다. 이러한 활약에 힘입어 제34회 서울가요대상에서는 최고 앨범상을 수상했다.

 특히 전작 ‘블루 파라다이스’는 빌보드 메인 앨범 차트 ‘빌보드 200’에서 28위로 첫 진입하며 K팝 5세대 그룹 중 최고 순위를 세웠다. 멤버들은 “빌보드 성적은 저희도 놀랐다”며 “이번 활동에서는 커리어 하이에 도전하고 싶다”고 전했다.

 데뷔 당시 이들의 활동 기간은 2년 6개월로 설정됐다. 연장 협의가 이뤄지지 않는다면 2026년 1월 활동 종료가 예정돼 있다. 최근 활동 연장설이 불거지기도 했지만, 이들의 미래에 대해서는 아직 확정된 내용은 없다.

 쇼케이스 현장에서 계약과 관련된 질문이 나오자 성한빈은 “최선의 방향을 향해 최대한 많은 대화를 나누고 있다”고 답했다. 한유진은 “팬분들이 원하는 선택을 아마도 하지 않을까 싶다”면서도 “아직 정해진 것은 없다”고 덧붙였다.

 특히 박건욱은 “멤버들 모두 아홉 명의 제로베이스원을 소중하게 생각한다는 말씀을 드리고 싶다”며 “하나의 팀으로 이어져 있을 뿐 아니라, 아홉 명은 인간적으로도 끈끈한 관계이기 때문에 저희가 함께 웃고 떠드는 모습을 팬분들께서 계속 지켜볼 수 있을 것”이라고 강조했다.

 이번 정규 앨범이 제로베이스원의 새로운 시대를 여는 출발점이 될지, 계약 종료 전 유종의 미가 될지 주목된다. 다만 멤버들은 “가장 중요한 건 팬분들께 열심히 준비한 이번 앨범을 들려드리는 것”이라며 “제로베이스원이라는 이름만 들어도 에너지가 느껴지는 팀으로 K팝 역사에 남고 싶다”고 바랐다. roku@sportsseoul.com
